Flip the Field or Get Flipped 🏈
We’re almost all into our summer routines now. The weight room’s humming. 7-on-7 is popping off. Coaches are meeting. Players are grinding. And fall camp? Just around the corner. But let me ask you something…
Are you ready to dominate all three phases of the game? Because most teams aren’t.
Where’s the Love for Special Teams? 🧐
Let’s be real—offseason workouts are usually about strength, speed, offense, and defense. That’s the meat and potatoes. But how many of us are carving out real time for special teams? Not just theory or film—but actual reps?
Kickers and punters might be getting their work in, but are they part of the team grind or off on their own island? What about your long snapper? Your returners? Your gunners?
Punt returners have one of the hardest jobs on the field. Why not field punts all offseason? Catching kicks from different angles. Working under pressure. Fakes, timing, chemistry with the long snapper. Operation time can be filmed. Evaluated. Sharpened.
Everything can be improved—and it doesn’t require full 11-on-11. Most offseason rules allow for individual and small group work. That’s perfect for special teams.
Coach, Are You Building All 3 Phases? 👀
Special teams wins games. We say it all the time. But do we treat it like it’s true?
Are your returners working on leverage and vision?
Are your athletes learning to tackle in space?
Do your coverage units understand lane integrity and contain?
Is anyone flipping the field before camp even starts?
Players—Are You Making Yourself Indispensable?
Special teams is opportunity. A place to prove toughness, speed, decision-making, and grit. If you’re not getting starter reps on offense or defense, are you carving out a role here? Because this is where rosters are made.
There are fakes to rep. Bad snaps to recover. Unexpected moments to prepare for. The best teams don’t leave it to chance.
Camp is coming. 🌞
Special teams can’t be an afterthought if you want to dominate this fall.
So tell me—how does your team prepare for special teams in the offseason? Are you building it into your culture or just hoping it comes together later?
Let me know in the comments, Big Dog.
