We’re in that strange stretch of the calendar. The season is right there — close enough to taste, but not quite on top of us yet. So what do you call this period?

Some say it’s still the off-season. Others treat it like the preseason has already begun. Then there’s a whole group of folks who say: There is no off-season at all. 🏋🏽‍♂️

Off-Season = Rest or Rust?

Every team handles the time between seasons differently. Some treat it like a breather. Time to coach other sports, chase hobbies, or just be a normal teenager for a little while. Those teams often come back feeling refreshed. There’s something special about reuniting after time apart — new energy, new perspective, and maybe even a few inches taller or stronger.

But…

There are other teams that don’t ever take their foot off the gas. They’re grinding from December through July like they’ve got a game on Friday night — every week. 🕒

And you know what? That chemistry shows up in August. Kickers who’ve been hitting all year? They come out the gate dropping 50-yarders and touchbacks. DBs who’ve been working footwork and press technique all winter? They’re already in mid-season form while others are shaking off the rust.

So What’s Better?

Honestly… it depends. There’s no magic formula. Some programs thrive by giving space. Others are built through constant contact.

But here’s the truth: Whatever your program does, that’s part of your football culture. And culture wins.

If your team is active during this stretch — weights, workouts, 7-on-7, film — then show up. Not just with your body, but with your focus and energy. If this time of year is a recharge phase, then make sure you’re recharging the right way: sharpening the mental game, staying in shape, and staying connected.
